Frequently Asked Questions

What is professional denture maintenance?
Professional maintenance includes deep ultrasonic cleaning, stain and calculus removal, polishing, structural inspection, and bite balancing.
How often should my dentures be professionally serviced?
We recommend professional denture maintenance and oral mucosa health checks every 12 months.
Can professional maintenance remove heavy coffee, tea, or tartar stains?
Yes! Our high-powered lab ultrasonic polishers remove stubborn tartar, tobacco, coffee, and tea stains that household brushing cannot clean.
How long does a professional denture clean and polish take?
A complete professional clean and high-shine polish takes just 30 to 45 minutes in our Oak Park lab.
How much does professional denture cleaning cost?
Professional cleaning and polishing ranges from A$80 to A$150 per denture.
Why should I avoid using toothpaste on my dentures at home?
Regular toothpaste contains harsh abrasives that create microscopic scratches in acrylic, trapping odor-causing bacteria and dimming shine.
What home cleaning products should I use for daily denture care?
Use a soft denture brush with warm water and mild dish liquid or specialized non-abrasive denture paste, soaking overnight in water.
Can regular maintenance prevent sore spots and gum inflammation?
Yes! Removing abrasive calculus buildup and adjusting minor high spots prevents mucosal ulcers, stomatitis, and tissue irritation.
Is annual denture checking covered for DVA cardholders?
Yes! DVA Gold Card holders receive fully covered annual denture examinations and professional maintenance.
What signs indicate my denture needs professional relining or adjustment?
If you need more adhesive, food collects under the base, or you experience sore spots, your denture requires a reline or adjustment.

Complete Guide

Everything you need to know about denture maintenance at Oak Park Denture Clinic Melbourne.

Our Services Denture Maintenance

Wearing Dentures when asleep.

If comfortable, dentures - (especially the lower),  should be removed at night. If it isn't comfortable or convenient to leave them out , give your dentures a good clean then massage your gums with a finger or soft tooth brush before sleeping with them in. Cleaning.

Start by cleaning the dentures with a soft toothbrush in a circular motion using denture toothpaste.  A soft nail brush can be used if you find the handle of a tooth brush difficult to grip. This will remove any debris and food particles. Then leave them in a bath of polident or steradent tablets (don’t use hot water) for the time suggested on the packet. This will help disinfect and freshen them up.

Professional Maintenance.

Book in to your Denture Clinic for a professional polish and clean once per year at which time your gums can be checked for a variety of common and uncommon conditions.

We recommend dentures be replaced every 5 to 6 years to keep up with changes occurring to the mouth and gums.  Dentures kept for too many years can cause accelerated shrinkage of the gums as well as a loss of your facial profile in general. These problems can be permanent. Partial Dentures.

Partial dentures should be removed and cleaned before retiring. Use this opportunity to clean your natural teeth as well.

If comfortable, they should be left out at night to stop acids and debris accumulating to form acidic plaque while you sleep.

Partial denture wearers are also advised to see their dentist every six months or so to have their remaining teeth checked and therefore limit the chances of further tooth loss.

Denture adhesives.

Such as polident paste can increase patient confidence during the transition phase when getting used to a new set of dentures.

Adhesives can be an enormous help for patients who have resorbed (flat) gums and can be a great help for people with dry mouths due to such things as medication, alcohol or age (to name just a few). Comprehensive Dental Care
